The Advantages And Disadvantages of Cyclone Separator

Date: 2021-07-08     From: Longding     Author: admin

The cyclone separator is a high-efficiency classification and desliming equipment, which mainly uses the centrifugal force generated by the rotary motion of the slurry for separation. Because of the simple structure, small footprint, and easy maintenance, cyclone separators have been widely used in concentration, grading, and dehydration operations. Here is a brief analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of the cyclone separator during operation.

The hydrocyclone is composed of a feeding pipe, overflow pipe mouth, cylinder, cone and grit mouth. Under the action of external pressure, the slurry enters the cyclone from the feed pipe along the tangential direction of the cylinder and is forced to make a rotary motion. The coarse-grained grade in the slurry is subjected to large centrifugal force, moves toward the inner wall of the cyclone, and spirals toward the grit port under its own gravity, and is discharged from the grit port to become an underflow.  When the pulp moves to the cone part, due to the continuous reduction of the cross-sectional area of the downward flow of the pulp, the inner layer contains a large amount of fine-grained pulp that is forced to change the flow direction and move upward, and finally discharge from the overflow pipe to become an overflow.

Advantages of cyclone separator

1. Fine graded granularity. The centrifugal force is many times larger than gravity, so the finest particle size of the cyclone classification can reach 0.074mm. Hydrocyclones are now mostly used for fine particle classification.

2. High classification efficiency. Especially grade materials with very fine particle size, the grading efficiency is significantly higher than other grading equipment.

3. Large processing capacity per unit volume.

4. The amount and time of slurry retention in the cyclone are small, and it is easy to handle when shutting down.

5. Simple structure, light and flexible, no moving parts, and easy maintenance.

6. Small footprint. With the same processing capacity, the hydrocyclone covers an area of about l/30 to l/50 of the spiral classifier.

7. Low investment cost

8. The size of the grit port can be adjusted.

Disadvantages of cyclone separator

1. High power consumption. The power consumption of the sand pump used by the cyclone for the mine is relatively large, which is about 5 to 8 times that of other grading equipment.

2. Wear fast. In particular, the wear around the feed inlet and the sand settling inlet is the fastest and needs to be replaced frequently. Therefore, wear-resistant parts such as inner rubber and polyurethane are often used, and they are easy to replace.

3. The fluctuation of feed pressure, feed quality, and feed particle size has a greater impact on the working indicators of the cyclone.
